This delicious apple coffee cake loaf is a healthier version of the classic. It uses almond meal and spelt flour in place of white flour, and maple syrup, and coconut palm sugar instead of refined sugars. The applesauce adds sweetness and moisture to the cake, while the cinnamon, nutmeg, and walnut topping gives it a delicious warm spice flavor. This recipe is perfect for breakfast or brunch, or as a dessert!

What is spelt flour?
If you’ve never heard of or used spelt flour before, it’s a type of whole-grain wheat flour that is more easily digestible than other types of wheat flour. It is composed of the entire wheat kernel, including the bran and germ. Spelt flour has a nutty flavor and is higher in protein and fiber than all-purpose flour. You can find spelt flour at most major grocery stores in the health/organic section. If your local grocery store doesn’t have it check the health food stores or online.

Why You’ll Love This Healthy Applesauce Coffee Cake:

  • Deliciously moist – Dense doesn’t mean dry! This coffee cake is moist, thanks to the applesauce, and has a delicious, dense texture.
