Chocolate Chip Halloween Cookies Ingredients & Substitutions:

All-purpose flour – You can make gluten-free Halloween cookies by using gluten-free flour, such as Bob’s Red Mill or King Arthur.

Brown sugar – This adds delicious moisture to the cookies. I’ve also used white sugar in this recipe and recommend only using brown sugar as using another type of sugar can change the texture of the baked cookies.

Butter – Salted or unsalted butter. I don’t recommend using melted butter as this can make the cookies spread too much while baking. I personally prefer salted butter as it brings out the chocolate chip flavor even more.

Granulated sugar – White sugar provides sweetness and helps the cookies get a crispy outer edge.

Egg – Allow the egg to reach room temperature prior to mixing it into the batter. I prefer to use large eggs for this recipe.

Chocolate Chips – You can use dark chocolate chips for dark chocolate Halloween chip cookies, white chocolate chips, or peanut butter chips.

Frosting – Vanilla frosting or chocolate frosting can be used. Use store-bought frosting or make your own from scratch. I personally prefer store-bought frosting for this recipe, it just makes it easier to put together!

Sprinkles – Use your preferred assortment of colorful Halloween sprinkles for this Halloween cookie recipe.

How To Store Chocolate Chip Halloween Cookies

Store leftover Halloween cookies at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 4 days or in the fridge for longer. These easy Halloween chocolate chip cookies can also be stored in the freezer for 1-3 months, although the freezing and thawing process can result in softened cookies.

Recipe FAQ’s:

Can I use store-bought cookies?

While these cookies are super easy to make, you CAN use store-bought chocolate chip cookies. Simply add the frosting and sprinkles in between 2 cookies to make your chewy cookie sandwich.

Should I chill the cookie dough?

I haven’t chilled the cookie dough for these simple chocolate chip cookies, but you can, especially if you plan on making the cookie dough ahead of time. In this case, the cookie dough should be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the fridge. These cookies are made with two cookies sandwiched together with frosting, so it’s fine if they aren’t as pillowy as other cookies.

What are some other ways to decorate the tops of the cookies?

Make spider cookies by placing extra chocolate chips on top of each freshly baked cookie and drawing spider legs with melted chocolate. Candy eyes can also be added to make Halloween monster cookies.

How can I vary these chocolate chip Halloween cookies?

Add pumpkin puree to the cookie batter to make soft pumpkin cookies or pumpkin spice for pumpkin spice chocolate chip cookies. Turn these cookies into large cookie sandwiches by increasing the size of each drop of cookie dough.

If you don’t enjoy sandwich cookies, simply omit the frosting listed in the recipe card.
