Home safety and security isn’t something that we talk about often here on the blog. Honestly, I think that it’s something that we as a society don’t talk about enough. Before having our little one, I always kind of pushed security to the back of my mind-we would just lock the doors and that was about it. After having our little one, I started to think a lot more about security and keeping our home safe. Now that it’s the holiday season and people are traveling more, home security is something that needs to be discussed. There are so many products on the market that promise to keep your home secure that it can be overwhelming. I am excited to share with you a few of my favorite tips to keep your Home Secure During the Holidays.
Use a timer. If you’re like me, you love your Christmas lights. They are beautiful when you are home to actually turn them on, but if you are out of town or just not home for the evening-a would be thief can quickly notice that your Christmas lights aren’t turned on. Using a timer not only saves power by cutting your lights off at a specific time, it also provides security by ensuring your lights come on even when you aren’t home.
Communicate. Do you have a trusted neighbor? Someone that lives nearby that you are close to? Let them know you are planning to go out of town. Ask them to drive by your house once or twice and check on things. Let them know descriptions of vehicles and people who are ‘ok’ to be at your house (i.e. dog walkers, etc.) and let them know to call the police if they see something out of the ordinary.
Hire a dog walker. If you have dogs, hire a dog walker-again, someone you trust. This keeps your dogs at your home, which is basically a built in alarm system. It also offers more traffic at your home while you are gone, keeping things more ‘normal’ looking.
Install a security camera. If you are like us, you aren’t really sure that you want to commit to a 3 year contract for a home security system. It just isn’t really budget friendly. For us, Canary was the solution to this problem. The set up is so easy, you can move the camera from room to room, depending on your needs and they even offer an outdoor camera option! I can log in to our Canary from anywhere using the app on my phone and see what is going on at our house. It is perfect if you have someone babysitting and you want to keep an eye on what is going on, or if you are going out of town and just want to keep an eye on your home. You can even set the app to alert you if there is movement in your home and if the temperature goes out of a set range (perfect for a nursery!).
How do you plan to keep your home secure this holiday season?
