Toddlers can be a handful, and any parent of a toddler can back up this claim. If you are a new parent, or this is your first time with a toddler, parenting can be a bit tricky.

Toddlers are still learning about the world around them, and right from wrong, so your parenting is going to be a bit different. Here are five tips for parenting a toddler that you need to know.

Be Consistent With Your Discipline

Consistency is so important when it comes to parenting a toddler. You want to make sure that you are staying consistent. Toddlers will test the limits to try and understand at what point punishment occurs from time to time.

They also need to learn what consequences will follow when they do something wrong. If you only discipline them some of the time, you’ll find you have more difficulty getting your toddler to behave.

Keep Mealtimes Simple

Mealtimes can be stressful when toddlers are involved. Whether you have a picky eater or not, all parents have experienced the dread that comes with trying to feed your toddler. My secret to making mealtime easier is simple, keep it simple.

If you know your toddler likes chicken nuggets, don’t try to switch to broccoli without any transition! Instead, introduce new foods to them by adding it with the foods they already love.

Rotate your meals between foods they like with foods they haven’t liked in the past, so they are encouraged not pressured to eat the new foods.

Explain How to Follow the Rules

Telling your toddler to stop hitting their sibling is not going to necessarily work. Instead of scolding your toddler for not knowing something, teach them how to follow the rules.

For example, teach them that instead of hitting their sibling when they don’t get their way, teach them to take turns sharing the toy they are fighting over. Most of the time, these actions aren’t as a result of anger or aggression, but rather because they don’t know what else to do.

Set a Good Example for Your Kids

One of the best ways you can parent your toddler is by setting a good example for your kids! Toddlers are going to watch what you do, and they will learn through your behaviors.

If you are yelling at someone on the phone or slamming doors, your toddler will learn to do the same. Remember that with everything you do, your little ones are watching you and learning by your example.

Recognize Good Behavior When You See It

Praise is a powerful motivator, especially for toddlers! If you see them doing something good or a habit, you want them to build, reward them! This could be through simple praise or a treat.

Recognizing and acknowledging good behavior lets them know that these acts aren’t going unnoticed.

Parenting is never easy, but these tips will make parenting your toddler a little better. Hopefully, these tips can help you with some of the most common toddler challenges, so you’ll be better prepared for whatever your toddler throws your way.
