We recently had the BEST time in South Florida! A few of you have asked what are the “musts” for a week in South Florida, so I decided to put together an ultimate guide for your next South Florida getaway!
We traveled on Allegiant Airlines and had such a wonderful experience. Both flights were on time or early and the customer service beyond exceeded my expectations. The entire process from booking to arriving home and picking up our baggage was seamless. I highly recommend flying Allegiant when traveling to South Florida.
The Toyota RAV4 that we drove during our time in Florida was amazing! It was such a cute car and so fun to drive. Perfect for any type of getaway! It has enough room that you can fit ALL of the luggage, but it was also amazing on gas (we averaged 30+ MPG!).
Orlando Stay and Play:
We stayed at the Wyndham Lake Buena Vista Disney Springs™ Resort Area and it was amazing! We had a great time, the room was amazing and it was so close to all of the attractions we wanted to visit. We even were able to see the fireworks from the Magic Kingdom and Epcot at night from our hotel room!
While we were in Orlando we visited Sea World and also Disney’s Animal Kingdom. They were both so fun and we had a blast. We didn’t have a ton of time to spend in Orlando, but I can’t wait to go back! I was so sad that we didn’t get to visit the Magic Kingdom, but unfortunately we ran out of time. I highly recommend visiting both Sea World and Disney’s Animal Kingdom if you are in Orlando.
Ft. Myers Beach Stay and Play:
Our stay at Diamondhead Beach Resort was wonderful! The room was not only amazing, but the hotel location was perfect and each staff member was friendly. The resort has everything you need so that you never have to leave the property during your stay. If you do want to explore the area a bit while you are visiting Ft. Myers Beach, I wrote about some of the local attractions here.
While we were in Ft. Myers Beach, we decided to take a day trip to Lover’s Key. It was a short 30 minute drive from our hotel and it was worth every minute of it. The beach was gorgeous! It felt like we had stepped onto our own private tropical island. My husband enjoyed a day of fishing and I relaxed on the beach. It is a public park so you do have to pay to park, but the fee was 100% worth it. There are walking trails, plenty of parking, restroom facilities and even a tram from the parking lot to the bridge that you can walk across to go to the beach.
While we were in Ft. Myers, we decided that we wanted to head to one of our favorite restaurants: Longhorn. You know how ‘tourist food’ can get old after awhile? We had enough of the overpriced and low quality food that we had gotten at some places during our trip, so we headed over to Longhorn for what we knew would be a delicious dinner. Of course, we weren’t disappointed. The service was excellent and the food was the delicious, high quality food that we get each time we visit a Longhorn location. That’s my favorite part of visiting a Longhorn Steakhouse: you know what you’re getting before you even walk in the door. You know you won’t be disappointed!
Tampa Bay Area:
After our wonderful time in Ft. Myers Beach, we headed back up the coast to the Tampa Bay area. This is a special area for us, because we actually left out of the Tampa Cruise port for our honeymoon 5 years ago! We only had a short time in Tampa, but we visited a place that’s so special to us: Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Have you seen the movie Dolphin Tale? Well, Clearwater Marine Aquarium is the location the movie is based around and the dolphin, Winter is still in their care! When we were on our honeymoon, we visited the Aquarium and this visit we headed back. I was so excited to see that they have been able to expand their rescue and rehabilitation efforts but they haven’t as we say in the South, “gotten too big for their britches”. The Aquarium has stayed the course and focused on taking amazing care of these animals.
Side note: let’s talk for a minute about how cute my outfit is. It’s from Lane Bryant and I seriously wore it 3 times on our trip. The shorts were so comfortable and the top allowed me to get some sun without showing too much skin. Another one of my favorite Lane Bryant outfits is below, it was perfect for evening dinners!
While we were in the Tampa area my husband wanted to do a bit more fishing, so we spent some time exploring the area, and asking around about good fishing piers. We stumbled across the cutest area: Safety Harbor. It’s a little blip on the map, right outside of Tampa and Clearwater, but it’s not touristy at all. It’s a gorgeous little town and it has an adorable little pier! We spent two evenings in Safety Harbor relaxing and fishing on the pier. While we were there, we saw manatees playing in the water and watched the most beautiful sunset.
We also visited one of my new favorite restaurants: Bar Fly. It’s one of the cutest places I’ve ever seen and the food was divine. I highly recommend the key lime pie and conch fritters. It’s quirky, fun and relaxing!
