Does anyone else get a little stressed as the holidays get closer? With the seemingly constant stream of guests, parties and dinners, it seems somewhat impossible to keep your home clean and company ready throughout the holidays. We have two dogs and an 11 month old. Some days, it seems like no matter how much I clean, our house will never stay that way. While the mountain of laundry is sometimes taller than I am, and most days our bed stays unmade, I have been making more of an effort this holiday season to keep our home ‘company ready’.
Create a routine.
I have been making it a point to keep a daily cleaning routine. In the evening, I load the dishwasher and let it run overnight. Then, in the morning, I empty the dishwasher, put a few loads of laundry in and wipe the counters down. I also have dubbed Tuesdays as “toilet Tuesday”, and I clean the bathrooms on Tuesdays. Setting and maintaining a cleaning routine has really helped me to keep up with the cleaning without feeling overwhelmed.
Take inventory and stock up.
Whether it’s toilet paper or easy to pop in the oven cookies, take inventory of what you have on hand early in the holiday season and stock up. If you know you are having a party, make a list of what you need a few weeks out and shop early. This will relieve the stress of shopping the day of the party. If you aren’t planning a party, but tend to have neighbors pop in with gifts or co-workers drop off cookies the Friday before Christmas, keep a few small gift items wrapped and readily available to hand out. Hand lotion, soaps, candles, popcorn tins and cookies are all great gifts that you can give out in a pinch.
It’s ok to have ‘that room’.
We all have ‘that room’. The one where we stash things when an unexpected guest shows up. For us, that’s our basement. It’s my organized chaos, but it’s an area that guests don’t go if they are visiting. In the event that someone calls and says they are dropping by in 30 minutes, I can take a basket of items down there and stash them until I can put them in their proper places. Having a space like this can give you a little relief during the holiday season.
Focus on what you see every day.
I spend a lot of time in our office, living room and dining room. Those are the areas where we also spend a lot of family time. I do my best to keep those rooms clean and in tip top shape (vacuumed, de-cluttered, etc.). These are also areas that guests spend time in when they are visiting. Keeping the areas clean that you see or spend time in daily is a must have for keeping your home holiday ready. For me, if I wake up and there are toys all over the floor, it just starts the day in a bad way. Keeping a basket in the corner to stash toys in or a drawer where I can put unread magazines until I get to them is a must.
We also recently installed hardwood floors in our house, so I try my best to keep those clean. I have tried so many products to keep the floors clean, but there always seems to be streaks (or paw prints) left. I could sit in our living room after just having mopped the floors and pick out streaks on the floor-it would stress me out! I recently discovered Bona products, and that has all changed!
The Bona Hardwood Floor Mop is my favorite way to keep our new floors in tip top shape. It is lightweight, easy to use and store, has a refillable cartridge and microfiber pad and even uses sonic motion deep cleaning to help clean up those inevitable sticky messes that a certain little one tends to create. I also don’t have to worry about the mop or products damaging our floors because Bona’s products are top of the line and made for hardwood floors. Bona has a wide variety of products to help you keep your floors clean and home holidy ready this season. I highly recommend them!
