Being a mom is a tough job! I didn’t realize just how much goes into being a mom until I was one. After having Levi in December 2015, I knew that it would take some time for me to physically recover. I went through 18 hours of labor and an emergency C-section, so to say my body went through a lot is an understatement. Since I’ve been a mom, I’ve had issues with back pain. Some days the pain is more severe than others, but most days I suffer from some sort of back pain or muscle aches. Pain like this can really put a damper on life as a busy mom, especially chasing a toddler around. Thankfully, I’ve found a few ways to handle the pain and get back to doing what I love: being a mom!
Don’t Over pack.
This can be tough for new moms. We carry TONS of stuff around, 80% of which we never use on a daily basis. I learned early on to ditch the clutter and take only what is necessary. This meant keeping an extra diaper bag in the car filled with extra clothes, diapers, etc. and only carrying 1-2 diapers, a few wipes and bottles/snacks with me into a store, etc. This lightens the load you have to carry around and helps tremendously with back pain.
Ask for Help.
I always ask my husband, mom, friends, etc. to carry the diaper bag or other items when we are out if I am carrying our little one around. Anytime I can lessen what I have to carry, this helps! Anytime he was out with us, my husband would carry our son in his car seat when he was smaller and my dad always helps if he’s with us. A big part of being a mom is learning to ask for help, even when it comes to the smaller things!
Being a new mom is stressful! I am the type of person that carries all of my stress and tension in my back and shoulders. After our difficult delivery and a NICU stay, I came home and settled in with a ton of pain in my back and shoulders. Learning to relax and de-stress has helped my pain. Taking time to myself to watch a show I like or read a book also tends to help me to decompress and the tension in my shoulders lightens.
Let Them Walk
I still struggle with this one. When Levi started walking, I was amazed. He is so independent and wants to walk EVERYWHERE. Of course, this comes with an entire new set of stresses and worries as a mom. I still catch myself picking him up and carrying him around the house when he could really be walking around. I’m learning to let him be more independent and walk more, which takes some of the pressure off of my back.
One Word: Biofreeze®
Biofreeze® is my go to when my back starts to ache. After a long day, like today, I can feel the aches and pains starting in my neck and working their way down to my lower back. I personally love the roll-on Biofreeze®, it makes those difficult areas to reach much easier. As soon as I roll it on, the area begins to immediately cool, almost as if I were using an ice pack (but much less messy) and within minutes the pain begins to lessen. Not only are Biofreeze® products fast-acting, but they are safe and effective pain relief alternative because they are non-systemic, non-narcotic, and contain no NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), salicylates or addictive substances. As a mom, this is highly important to me. I want to be on top of my game and having a safe product that reduces my pain is important in helping me get back to doing what I love the most!
