3 Tips for Getting More Sleep as a New Parent

When people tell you ‘get your rest now, before you have kids’, they weren’t joking! In the past 11+ months, I think I have slept through the night one time-and that was a night that our little one spent the night at my mom’s house. As moms and new parents, we are exhausted. It makes me laugh to look back before I was a mom and think about all the times I complained of being tired. It seems like as parents, we just adjust to the new norm of being tired all the time. Over the past almost year, I have learned a few tips that have helped me to get more sleep as a new parent.

Schedule some downtime for yourself. I know, you are laughing at me right now if you are a parent. Downtime, what’s that? Seriously though, try it. Even if it’s just 15 minutes that you cut the phone off and turn on your favorite reality TV show after the little ones are a sleep. Turn off the electronics, try to cut off your brain and just relax for a few minutes. Take a hot shower, drink a glass of wine or read a good book. Like I said, I know that time isn’t something most of us parents have a ton of, but try to find at least 15 minutes for yourself in the evening right before you go to bed to unplug and unwind.

Getting More Sleep as a New Parent

Create a haven. I’m not the best home decorator in the world and most of the items in our bedroom are a collection of gifts and things that we have picked up in our travels the past 6+ years. So, our bedroom has a bit of an eclectic feel. If you are like me and you don’t have a ton of money to spend on home decor or creating a magical bedroom seen in magazines, that doesn’t mean that your room can’t be a haven for you. Get rid of the electronics, if you can. Charge your phone in another room at night so you aren’t tempted to look at when you are relaxing, add an essential oil diffuser with lavender or another relaxing blend, select a blanket that you really love or a nice decorative pillow that makes you happy and make that the focal point of your room. Creating a haven doesn’t have to cost a ton of money, it just requires a little creativity and elbow grease.

Invest in your sleep. When we first got married close to 5 years ago, we bought the cheapest bed we could find. It was a generic brand Queen set from a local big box store. The box springs came free with the mattress and we bought the cheapest metal frame we could find. While it has been a great bed, we have known for a while that we needed to upgrade. The bed was getting uncomfortable and when I came home from the hospital after having our little one and also recovering from a C-section, it was miserable sleeping in the bed. Very useful sleep ideas for a new parent. Few things can improve your sleeping quality such as a good comfortable bed, maintain sleep routine, go to the bed asap, use perfume, light dinner, avoid drinking, using air conditioner in bedroom, taking regular exercise, etc. If someone can follow these tips, he/she must get a comfortable night sleep.
