Are Wedding Rings Outdated? As a wedding and event planner, I have had several clients ask me this question. With so many new ideas and trends popping up daily when it comes to weddings, it is only natural for a bride and groom to ask “are wedding rings outdated?” Are they a tradition that isn’t really necessary? Are they something that just puts a huge dent in your budget and a cost that could be cut?
In my professional opinion, no, wedding rings are not outdated. There are many trends that come and go when it comes to weddings, iridescent puffy sleeved dresses anyone? Wedding rings are not one of those trends. Wedding rings are a symbol of not only your marriage, but also your love and commitment to that person.
Besides photos, your wedding ring is the one tangible item that you will take away from your wedding day. It is something you wear every day. Some are turning to tattoos for wedding rings, wearing other jewelry such as bracelets, or even choosing to spend the money that would have been spent on rings for a honeymoon or down payment on a house. While these things are all wonderful, I can’t see how they can replace the importance of a wedding ring. My wedding ring is the one thing that I wear every day, no matter what other jewelry I am wearing, what outfit I am wearing or where I am going, I always put my wedding ring on. It shows the world that I am married, I am taken and I am loved.
Call me old fashioned, but I believe that wearing a wedding ring symbolizes something. It symbolizes the commitment that my husband and I made to each other years ago. Neither of our wedding rings are extravagant. Like many couples, we didn’t have much when we first got married and our rings reflect that. My husband wears a simple tungsten ring. It fits his personality and his job. He is a heavy equipment operator and works outside, so he needed a durable ring. While he could have opted for a tattoo or other ‘symbol’ of our marriage and commitment, he did not feel that wedding rings are outdated and opted for an actual ring.
There are many opinions out there about wedding rings and whether they are a fading trend or a timeless tradition. In my opinion, they are a timeless tradition; after all, what is the first thing that you are asked about after you get engaged? What does the ring look like? While it may just be my opinion, there is no doubt many others share my sentiment. Whenever a celebrity gets engaged or married, the first photos that people clamor to see are the ‘ring shots’! Rings don’t have to break your budget or cramp your style, there is a ring out there for everyone and every budget. It may take a little effort, but it is worth it to find the perfect ring for you and your spouse. I promise you won’t regret it!
